About OAFN

Established in 2007, the Organic Agriculture Foundation of Nigeria is the national unifying platform for safe, healthy, and economically viable food systems.

The Context

Nigeria’s agricultural sector is at a critical crossroads.

While agriculture remains the backbone of rural livelihoods and national food supply, the sector faces escalating challenges including:

  • Soil degradation
  • Climate change impacts
  • Declining productivity
  • Food safety concerns
  • Youth unemployment
  • Farmer–herder conflicts
  • Increasing dependence on synthetic agrochemicals

A major barrier is the high cost of third-party certification. OAFN was established to provide a unified national coordinating platform, utilizing Participatory Guarantee Systems (PGS)—a transparent and cost-effective quality assurance mechanism—to provide a credible alternative that strengthens farmer organizations and builds consumer trust.

Our History

OAFN was created in 2007 and formally registered in September 2010. It was pioneered by dedicated agricultural visionaries including Alh. Ibrahim Abbagubio, Sarki Abdullahi Ibrahim, and Prince Peter Okedare Bakare.
